Academics Programs

  • At ICHS, we take pride in being a part of the New York Performance Standards Consortium, which emphasizes authentic learning and assessment. As a Consortium school, we assess our students through PBAT (Project-Based Assessment Task) portfolios, offering an alternative to traditional high-stakes Regents exams, with the ELA Regents being the only exam required for graduation.

Through PBATs, students demonstrate mastery of core subjects by engaging in rigorous, in-depth projects that prepare them for post-secondary success. This approach offers several key benefits:

    • Development of Critical Skills: Students engage in research that fosters critical thinking, high-level reading, and data analysis, essential for college and career readiness.

    • Authentic Learning: The PBAT process emphasizes real-world applications, allowing students to explore topics deeply and meaningfully.

    • Public Speaking and Defense: Students enhance their communication skills by presenting and defending their research to a panel of peers, teachers, and administrators.

    • Personalized Learning: PBATs allow students to pursue areas of interest within their projects, leading to more personalized and engaging learning experiences.

    • Preparation for College: The skills developed through PBATs, such as research, writing, and public speaking, directly align with the demands of college coursework.

This method of assessment ensures that ICHS students are not only meeting academic standards but are also well-equipped for success in their future educational and professional endeavors.

  • Our 11th Grade Internship Program offers students valuable hands-on experience in various professional environments. By partnering with a diverse array of organizations, including local businesses, schools, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations, we provide students with opportunities to explore different career paths and develop essential skills for their future. During their internships, students will:

    • Build independence and a sense of responsibility through real-world tasks.

    • Enhance their communication abilities by interacting with professionals in the workplace.

    • Learn the importance of professionalism in areas such as attire, behavior, and workplace communication.

For additional information about our internship program, please contact 11th grade team or the school at (718)-665-4128

  • At ICHS, our Morning Class is a before-school program developed by Alhassan Susso. This initiative is designed to empower students by focusing on five essential skills that contribute to their overall growth and success beyond the classroom:

    • Developing the Right Attitude and Mindset: Encouraging a positive and growth-oriented mindset to help students navigate challenges effectively.

    • Creating Clear Goals and Vision for the Future: Assisting students in setting and pursuing personal and academic goals.

    • Communication Skills: Enhancing students' ability to communicate effectively, both in academic and personal contexts.

    • Leadership: Fostering leadership qualities to prepare students for future roles and responsibilities.

    • Financial Management: Teaching basic financial management skills to help students handle economic aspects of their lives.

The Morning Class was established in response to the understanding that academic success alone is not enough if students' broader life needs are not addressed. By integrating these life skills into the program, we aim to support our students socially, professionally, academically, and economically.

  • College Now is a FREE college transition/dual enrollment program for New York City Department of Education high school students. This program allows ICHS students to get a head start on their college education by taking college-level courses while still in high school. This program offers our students the opportunity to earn college credits, explore academic interests, and experience the rigor of college coursework, all at no cost. Participating in College Now helps students:

    • Build academic skills and confidence in a college setting.

    • Earn credits that can be applied to their future college degrees.

    • Make informed decisions about their educational and career goals.

This valuable opportunity prepares students for a smooth transition to higher education and sets them on the path to academic success. For additional information about our College Now opportunities please reach out to our Educational Pathways office or the school at (718)-665-4128.

  • AP Seminar is a foundational course designed to engage students in thoughtful conversations across various disciplines, exploring academic and real-world issues from multiple perspectives. In this course, students will develop essential skills in research, writing, reading, and presenting at a college level. The primary focus is on learning how to think critically rather than what to think.

Throughout the year, students will have significant choice and autonomy in selecting the issues they wish to address and the approaches they take. The first semester will emphasize problem-solving on topics that matter to each student, while the second semester will focus on constructing well-reasoned arguments about personally meaningful topics. This course not only prepares students for high school and college success but also equips them to become engaged, analytical members of their communities.

Committed To Supporting All Of Our Students

At ICHS, our staff and teachers are dedicated to supporting students both inside and outside the classroom, especially those from vulnerable populations. In today’s political climate, we understand the importance of ensuring our students’ safety and well-being. Students are encouraged to speak confidentially with our guidance counselors if they have concerns about their own immigration status or that of a family member or friend. We also have connections with local organizations that specialize in helping immigrant families, providing additional resources and support.
